SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois has received a $100,000 grant to better prepare students for careers in high-skill, in-demand industries.
The Illinois State Board of Education announced Tuesday that Illinois is one of 24 states to be awarded grants through the New Skills for Youth initiative.
JPMorgan Chase started the $75 million, five-year program to increase economic opportunities for young people.
ISBE officials say that nationwide, only half of young people have post-secondary credentials that allow them to compete for a good-paying job by age 25.
Illinois has been working to identify areas where skilled workers are needed, such as manufacturing, and to provide education at the high school and community college level.
State Superintendent of Education Tony Smith says the programs give students "hands-on experience that can translate to a high-paying career."
