ROCKPORT, Maine (AP) — Organizers expect about 800 people to be on hand for an annual three-day home schooling conference in Maine.

The Portland Press Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1pvPMJ8 ) the conference is scheduled to get underway Thursday in Rockport. Organizers say the 26th annual conference for Homeschoolers of Maine will feature speakers, workshops and an expo hall with vendors.

State Department of Education data shows that 3 percent of students in the state were home-schooled in the 2014-15 school year. That's slightly lower than the 3.4 percent national average, but the number is growing.

More than 5,500 students were home-schooled in the state during that school year. That's a 36 percent increase over a decade earlier.
