ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — Residents in southern Utah's Washington City are cleaning up after thunderstorms flooded several homes Monday.
Washington City Fire Chief Brent Hafen says the flooding affected a grocery store and several homes, leaving 2 feet of water in one basement.
The Spectrum of St. George reports (http://bit.ly/1vdeJ9d) the heavy rain overwhelmed city drainage systems.
Washington City Manager Roger Carter says the city will inspect drainage systems for any improvements but he says it would be very expensive to build a system to weather heavy rains as seen Monday.
Brian McInerney with the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City says Washington City received more than 2 inches of rain in about an hour Monday.
He says more storms are expected Tuesday.
