SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Police say a man who jumped 70 feet from a cliff into a Vermont lake has died of blunt force trauma from hitting the water.

Police say 41-year-old Shelburne resident Michael O. Hansen died Monday evening.

They say he jumped into Lake Champlain from the cliffs of Red Rocks Park in South Burlington. He was seen swimming slowly afterward, but when others reached him he was unresponsive.

Emergency crews responded to a call of a possible drowning off the park's western cliffs. CPR was performed, but Hansen died at a hospital.

Police say a preliminary autopsy determined that he died of blunt force trauma from the impact with the water.
