PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — A judge has dropped all charges against the mayor of Portsmouth after police chased the official down for an expired inspection sticker.
A prosecutor says the low-speed chase should never have happened in the first place because the sheriff could have given the mayor the ticket at any time since he knew who he was.
Local news outlets report that the charges against Mayor Kenny Wright were dropped on Monday at the request of special prosecutor Verbena Askew.
On Jan. 12, Sheriff Bill Watson attempted to stop Wright and issue him a citation for an expired inspection sticker. Wright did not stop and a low-speed chase ensued. Watson cited Wright for the expired sticker and a felony eluding charge.
