YUMA, Ariz. (AP) — Border Patrol officials say an Arizona agent fatally shot a man who assaulted him after illegally crossing the border.
Authorities say the shooting happened late Thursday in the Yuma area.
The agent says he was hit in the head by the man who also tried to take his gun from its holster. The agent says he feared for his life and fired the weapon.
Both men were taken to a Yuma hospital.
The suspect was pronounced dead. The agent suffered cuts and bruises to his head, face and torso as well as a concussion.
Authorities say per policy, the agent is on administrative leave.
