SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Five Utah State Prison inmates have been charged with stabbing another prisoner.

KSL-TV reports the men were charged Wednesday with felony counts of aggravated assault, possessing a prohibited item in the prison and obstruction of justice.

Authorities say the five men are documented gang members and they could face additional penalties because the stabbing was allegedly related to gang activity.

Charging documents say Gabriel Hernandez was stabbed in his neck, back, hips and hand and has lost the function of one of his fingers.

The men are 20-year-old Devin Brock Smith, 29-year-old Pedro Carrasco, 23-year-old Devin Johnson, 40-year-old Leonires Martinez and 30-year-old Julian Padilla.

Smith has been convicted of murder and was sentenced to at least 15 years in prison in March. The other men have been convicted of other crimes.

No attorney was listed for the men.
