CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — More than 20 cats seized from a Charleston home have been euthanized.
Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association executive director Chelsea Staley tells media outlets that a veterinarian determined the cats were in critical health and were infected with diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans.
Staley says the cats were euthanized to protect the public, the association's staff and another 350 animals housed at the group's shelter.
She says the cats were quarantined in an adjacent building. But the shelter has halted cat adoptions and admissions until further notice as a precaution.
Dog admissions and adoptions are continuing.
Humane officers seized 24 cats, including one that had died, on June 9 from Amanda Woods' home. Staley previously said Woods operated a rescue group at the home.
