It is critically important that materials and workmanship on construction projects be perfect. CMT Engineering Laboratories is in the business of ensuring quality work. The company performs inspections and testing on workmanship, code compliance, construction material and other aspects of building and construction projects.

Doug Watson, president of Logan-based CMT Engineering, says his company also has offices in Salt Lake City, Price and Phoenix. It has been devoted to quality assurance since its inception in 1978. Doug says the company is proud of its tradition of supplying high-quality services in areas such as environmental investigation, geotechnical investigation, construction material evaluation, paint testing and organic chemistry.

Testing is done on concrete, soils, asphalt, masonry structural steel and paint. When roads are constructed, it is vital that compaction, gradation and plasticity are checked and have a minimum of variation in material properties. Climate factors are also important in the evaluation of work and materials.

Some people refer to the company as the Construction Cops because it monitors work and materials. Doug said about 60 percent of the company's business is with the Utah Department of Transportation but it also works extensively with cities and counties. Stimulus money has also generated significant business for CMT.

Doug and Craig Cartwright, the company's chief executive officer, stressed that the quality of services is guided by belief in the following principles: accuracy of data, timeliness of services and an attitude of being a resource for clients.

CMT Engineering Laboratories offers several classroom training programs tailored to the specific needs of its customers. The company also has a fleet of portable laboratories designed for heavy civil construction projects.
