By all accounts, Millard County Sheriff Deputy Josie Greathouse Fox was a remarkable law enforcement officer with an uncanny ability to touch and improve the lives of the people she encountered.

She will be missed most by those who knew her best - her family and friends in her hometown of Delta. The spontaneous displays of appreciation in the aftermath of her tragic death earlier this week affirmed the extent of the exceptional impact Deputy Fox had on her community.

She'd only been a cop for five years. Yet, in that relatively short time, this wife and mother of two used a compassionate approach to law enforcement that endeared her to those she served. In the words of her boss, the county sheriff, "She loved her work. She was always smiling. She enjoyed helping and assisting people." That she died at the hands of a gunman on a rural highway late at night underscores the inherent dangers of her chosen profession.

She is the 129th Utah law enforcement officer to die in the line of duty, and only the second woman in the state's history to meet such a fate. KSL joins the entire state in mourning the death of Deputy Josie Greathouse Fox.
