This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Ken Ewell discovered he enjoyed working with his hands at a young age. As a seventh grader, he made a shoeshine box that helped him gain a lifelong love for woodworking.

Ken spent the first few years of his professional life working for several other companies, including the LDS Church and other local woodworking companies. One day he decided he was ready to start his own company, and the result was Westwood Mill & Cabinet, founded in 1984.

Westwood Mill & Cabinet manufactures high-quality cabinets and millwork. Its list of products includes custom cabinets, mouldings, counters, pre-finishing, and furniture. The company has completed projects for everyone from schools and hospitals to banks and law offices. All clients receive the same level of quality, regardless of a project's size.

Ken tells me that he's very much a hands-on owner. Although he has an office and full staff, he's much more likely to be found out on the floor, supervising and making sure everything is going just right. He proudly refers to himself as the shop foreman.

Unfortunately, Westwood Mill & Cabinet has not been immune from the effects of the bad economy. Ken says he's had to get leaner and meaner, but his volume has remained the same. In fact, if the current volume continues, he says the business is looking at a record year. That could be because he and his staff go to all lengths to keep customers happy, fixing any problems that arise immediately.

Most recently, Ken tells me he also started a countertop business called Cut Above Countertops. He would like to eventually expand it to the point that he has a division to service his own and other companies. In the meantime, he hopes Westwood Mill & Cabinet can continue to be known for its quality work and ability to meet deadlines.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
