This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Did you know that some of the world's most advanced nutritional technology is being developed right here in Utah? That's right. Albion Laboratories of Clearfield has created processes by which plants, animals and humans can better utilize mineral nutrients.

To detail how this is possible, I need to explain a little about chelation (key-lay-shan). Chelation is a natural process that takes place in the stomach to change inorganic minerals into organic minerals that the body can absorb in the intestinal wall as part of digestion. Albion Laboratories' founder Harvey Ashmead, who was a pharmacist, discovered a process to chelate nutritional minerals into amino acids, allowing them to be ingested more easily and then be utilized by the body. This organic chelated mineral form is efficiently absorbed instead of being eliminated during the digestion processes. Harvey launched Albion Laboratories in 1956 using this principle.

Jim Hyde, chief executive officer of Albion Laboratories, says today, Albion is the leading science and research company in the field of organic mineral nutrition. It has secured more than 130 patents. The company has three divisions: human, animal and plant nutrition. Albion products have been so well received that about 40 percent of its revenue is derived from international markets.

Albion has a presence in more than 100 countries mainly through distributor partners. Major international markets include Canada, Latin America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Many of these partnerships have been in existence for more than 20 years. Having such a strong international presence is an effective way to protect against localized economic problems because although the economy might not be great in one market, it's much better in another.

Albion Laboratories recognizes that mineral nutrition plays an important role in the health and nutrition field. Jim says Albion will continue to stay on the cutting edge of nutritional mineral science and technology and product development.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
