This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Jim Elwell, president of QSI Corporation in Salt Lake City, is proud of his products — Mobile Data Terminals and Human Machine Interfaces (or HMIs, as they are commonly called) — and told me they are designed and manufactured to be extremely rugged.

To emphasize this point, Jim opened the door to the conference room where we were visiting and proceeded to throw a terminal through the open door where it hit the reception area floor with a bang, bounced a few times a skidded to a stop against a desk. He then picked it up, turned it on and showed me that it still worked well.

Jim and Todd Christensen, QSI's marketing director, took me into their spacious factory. I saw an environmental chamber that cycles the terminals through extreme cold, heat and humidity; a shake tester that aggressively shakes the terminal at high speeds; and an automated pneumatic key press tester that pushes keys in excess of two million times. Additional tests provide assurance that the terminals can withstand electrostatic discharge, fierce winds, snow and rain.

The Mobile Data Terminals are created for vehicle system integrators. Many companies use them for in-cab fleet management, dispatching, messaging, reporting, mapping and navigation.

The HMIs. are widely used in manufacturing, forestry, agriculture, asset management, process control, robotics, utilities and field services. And they are made durable for use in harsh environments.

Jim Elwell started the company in 1983 with a $60,000 investment from family and friends. He was the only employee. Today, QSI has 85 employees and will produce 40,000 units this year.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
