BEIJING, Dec 12, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Workers have begun moving 620,000 cultural artifacts and other items out of the National Museum of China in preparation for an expansion project.
China's official Xinhua news agency said the extensive project is set to begin in April. The removal of thousands of items is expected to take about two months.
The museum, located in Beijing, will be expanded at a reported cost of 2.6 billion yuan ($330 million dollars).
"The museum will expand 100 meters eastwards and its floor space will increase to 192,000 square meters -- the largest in the world once the project is completed in 2010," said Curator Lu Zhangshen.
Lu told Xinhua temporary exhibits will help make up for visitor losses during the expansion.
