Lisbon (dpa) - Portuguese surrealist poet and painter Mario Cesariny de Vasconcelos has died at his Lisbon home, press reports said Monday.

Cesariny, who was suffering from cancer, passed away on Sunday. He was 83.

Numerous tributes to the man regarded as Portugal's leading surrealist included that of President Anibal Cavaco Silva, who described Cesariny as "one of Portugal's biggest names in the 20th century."

After studying art and music in Lisbon, Cesariny studied art in Paris, where he met French surrealist Andre Breton in 1947.

A rebellious attitude and constant experimenting marked the character and work of Cesariny, who not only criticized dictators Antonio Salazar and Marcelo Caetano, but also the military officers whose Carnation Revolution ended nearly 50 years of dictatorship in 1974.

Cesariny's career of half a century produced more than a dozen works, spanning from Corpo Visivel (1950) to Titania (1994).
