NEW YORK, Nov 14, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The 10th anniversary of the Broadway musical "Chicago" was celebrated Tuesday with a gala benefit performance at New York's Ambassador Theater.
As part of the honorary show, which raised funds for the victims-assistance group Safe Horizon, the stars of the ongoing version of the raucous musical were teamed with the leads from the original 1975 version, the New York Daily News said.
Also in attendance were countless celebrities who at one point in their careers were cast members for the musical either in London, New York or in one of several international touring companies, the newspaper reported.
During its 10-year run, the John Kander and Fred Ebb-scored musical has counted such celebrities as actors Richard Gere and Melanie Griffith among its ranks, as well as popular singers such as Usher and Ashlee Simpson.
The Daily News said not only has the musical drawn in countless big names during its 10 years on Broadway, but has also grossed $300 million in ticket sales since its first raised its curtains in 1996.
