Even when the stars align against the Ventura College women's soccer team, the class of the Western State Conference figures out a way to put them in their place.
Key defender Michelle Jameson pulled her hamstring taking the field and influential midfielder Britney Arauz-Martinez rolled her ankle in warm-ups, yet the Pirates persisted to clinch their 11th straight WSC title with 2-0 win over Hancock on Tuesday night at the VC Sportsplex.
Jessica Larimer scored from a goalmouth scramble in the 11th minute, Sienna Kluck headed home Breanna Blankenburg's far-post corner kick and Ventura kept a shutout despite playing without Jameson.
One year after waiting until the final day, Ventura (16-2-1), ranked No. 11 in the nation, clinched the WSC North with two matches to play with a 10-0 record.
"I'm pleased for the kids," said coach Steve Hoffman. "Last year was tough for them. They didn't do as well as they wanted to and they had to fight."
