OAXACA, Mexico, Oct 28, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A New York news photographer was shot and killed while covering a violent teachers' strike in Oaxaca, Mexico, it was reported Saturday.

Bradley Will, 36, was taking photos and video of the Oaxaca conflict for the Independent Media Center, an Internet-based alternative news agency, when he was shot Friday, the Los Angeles Times said Saturday.

At least eight people have died during the five-month-old strike.

A Spanish human rights observer said he and Will shared a ride to report on violence near an entrance to the colonial capital. Will was hit in the abdomen by gunfire as he walked, the Times said.

Protesters alleged the journalist was killed when government operatives attacked a street barricade; however, state officials denied involvement in the shooting, the Times said.

The state's 70,000 teachers tentatively agreed to return to work last week in exchange for a 30 percent raise over six years, the Times said. The agreement sparked protests by other workers who demanded that Oaxaca Gov. Ulises Ruiz resign, the Times said.
