This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
Ryan Nielsen had been running a countertop company for almost five years when he discovered a new composite product called Shirestone that he felt would be a good way to diversify his Murray-based business. He became Utah's first registered dealer for the cement-like product.
Ryan applied for a small business loan through Zions Bank shortly after it had been invited by the U.S. Treasury to participate in the Capital Purchase Program. Healthy banks like Zions have been encouraged to buy the government capital that will not only provide a return to taxpayers, it will also help more small businesses like Ryan's succeed. With a U.S. Small Business Administration line of credit, Ryan launched Riverstone Design Company last November.
Despite an uncertain economy, Ryan remains optimistic about starting a company right now because of his unique offerings. Shirestone is similar to a cement product but is much more diverse. Ryan uses it to provide texture and color on all kinds of surfaces, from countertops and fireplace mantles to tub and shower surrounds. He can even create custom benches and commercial signage with it. Customers enjoy its natural stone look and use for both indoor and outdoor projects.
Ryan approaches each day as a challenge he's willing to take on. The 32-year-old father of three looks at his business with the perspective that he can't fail. He has re-thought his business practices and found more efficient ways of completing work and he has strengthened his belief in providing a high-value product and excellent customer service.
Small business owners like Ryan are in a distinctive position to help create jobs and add fuel to the market, an essential function in this difficult economy our country is facing.
For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
