This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
Rick Priddis discovered at a young age that he didn't want to work for anybody but himself. As a result, he was on the lookout for opportunities to become a business owner.
As a vocal major at BYU, Rick enjoyed singing, but at that time, karaoke didn't exist. So he began making musical recordings that he could sing to. Proud of his accomplishment, he showed it to friends, other students and his teachers who were all so excited. He eventually took his product to trade shows and started selling to record store chains throughout the country. Karaoke as we know it was becoming popular at the time, so Rick was in the right place at the right time to launch his business, Priddis Music.
Today, 25 years later, Lindon-based Priddis Music has more than 3,000 songs available that clients can use for karaoke performances. Rick says many of the tracks are geared toward serious performers, such as pageant contestants and vocal students.
The songs that are popular at any given time vary, and Rick says it goes in cycles. Boy bands and music from Broadway musicals are top sellers and people also enjoy Christmas songs. Rick prides himself on stringently following licensing and royalty requirements for all musical genres.
As technology has changed, Rick has adapted his business to keep up with the changes: He's moved from cassettes to CDs to DVDs. Today, many of his music tracks are available worldwide on major downloading sites such as iTunes, Napster and the Priddis Music site. Last year, Rick and his team also converted their former CD warehouse into a brand new recording studio.
Rick's goal for Priddis Music is to eventually branch into other areas besides karaoke like providing educational music products and background tracks for movies and TV.
For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
