This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
I recently learned that there is a need for close to 200,000 truck drivers per year. When you stop to think of the vast amounts of products shipped around the nation on a daily, monthly and even weekly basis, it makes sense that the need would be so great.
After working as a manager for a national trucking company in California for 20 years, Antonio Tinti moved to Utah. It didn't take him long to discover a truck driver deficit in the state, so he decided to do something about it. In 2004, he founded TNT Trucking School in Salt Lake City.
TNT Trucking School provides a six-week course that teaches participants everything they need to know to obtain their CDL, the license to become a truck driver. Students study subjects including air brakes, general trucking knowledge and pre-trip inspection and take driving classes and a road test. The Department of Transportation is very strict in its requirements for truck owners and operators, and the school also teaches students what they should know to meet those requirements.
Classes are offered during the evenings and on Saturdays so those who are already employed can participate more easily. The school teaches classes in both English and Spanish, offers financing options and can assist with job placements. Antonio tells me he has received a positive response to his school thus far. Many students have told him about their improved quality of life from joining the trucking business after being stuck in low-paying jobs. One of his goals was to help the community gain a better understanding of the trucking industry, and he feels he is accomplishing this.
Eventually, Antonio would like to expand his school into other areas, such as St. George and Las Vegas. He tells me TNT Trucking School is set apart from other programs because of the high level of service it offers to its students.
