That's my revisionist version of the lyrics to "Down" by Stone Temple Pilots. Don't know how well it goes with the tune, but the message is clear. It's time for these guys to make some new music.
Maybe I was born on the wrong day, under the wrong sign or something. All I know is, folks that grew up Beatles fans got too many albums. 2pac and Biggie were gunned down more than a decade ago, and somehow they manage to put out new stuff. Then, there's one of my favorite bands from my teen years. Scott Weiland and the guys are back. They do shows. They're just not making any new music. They're still apparently quibbling over some old record deal they're trying to escape.
Don't get me wrong. The Velvet Revolver albums were ok. Weiland's new solo album, "Happy in Galoshes," is nice, but too mellow too often. I could even tolerate the DeLeo brothers' project, Army of Anyone -- even though they went with Filter lead singer Richard Patrick. But c'mon ... for a fan, for the world ... seize the day!!!
Same goes for Rage Against the Machine. When that band split, at least fans had Audioslave. It featured all the band members minus Zach de la Rocha. Chris Cornell (formerly of Soundgarden) was the singer. They made good music. The band placed songs on Michael Mann flics "Collateral" (Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, 2004) and "Miami Vice" (Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, 2006). Guitar guru Tom Morello's magic was still alive. But now, they've split. What's a guy to do?
Even more frustrating was learning that RATM regrouped. They've done shows. Still, Morello says no new music any time soon. One Day As a Lion, featuring de la Rocha, is out with a five-track album. It's pretty solid, but it isn't Rage. And that's too bad ...
Anyway, I know I'm a whiny fan. I'm not apologizing. It is what it is. What's the message? Just be thankful if you've got a band that you like that stays together for the long haul.
