GARDEN CITY, N.Y., Sep 27, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A Garden City, N.Y., woman has filed a suit claiming a biopsy mix-up resulted in her being falsely diagnosed with breast cancer, followed by unneeded surgery.
Lynne Yurosko, 56, underwent a lumpectomy and 25 radiation treatments as a result her sample being switched with another woman's sample, Newsday said. Her doctor was notified of the error after she had undergone treatment.
Documents filed at State Supreme Court in Garden City said the mix-up involved Yurosko's November 2004 biopsy sample, Newsday said. She is suing a medical and testing center, a diagnostic center and four doctors.
Court documents said the other woman was retested and correctly diagnosed with cancer before Yurosko's doctor was told of the mix-up, Newsday said.
Yurosko, who said she is worried about the radiation's side effects, said, "You trust them to give you accurate information. You have this fear that it wasn't just me. It can be other women," Newsday said.
The suit asks that a jury determine damages. Yurosko's attorney said he expects to go to trial in 2007.
