Anyone who was in the Beehive State this winter knows how odd the weather was the whole season. According to the Utah Division of Water Resources, the state has the lowest snowpack on record as summer approaches.
In fact, Bull Frog Marina at Lake Powell is moving to Stanton Creek because of water level challenges.
But that doesn't mean you still can't enjoy the lakes and reservoirs this summer.
Even if water levels are low, boating is still possible.
By knowing in advance what you need to do and bring, you can safely navigate Utah's outdoor recreation spots. Here are some tips and tools for boaters.

Monitor water levels
Perhaps the most important thing to do when you're heading out on the water is to monitor the water levels.
The National Parks Service notes that water levels will fluctuate throughout the year, so boaters should be prepared for ramp closures and lots of people waiting in line to launch. You can check ramp closures on their website.
Additionally, it's crucial to keep track of water levels when you're actually out on the water.
The Lake Genius app can help you identify coves deep enough to anchor in, which channels are still passible, and where the shoreline is today versus five days ago.
Within the app, you can identify hazards, see the shoreline and underwater structures, identify ideal fishing depths, and more.
Currently, users can navigate Lakes Powell, Mead, Tahoe, Roosevelt, Pleasant, and Bear Lake. Learn more on the Lake Genius website.
Track the weather
When bad weather strikes, being stranded in the middle of the lake is the last thing you want.
With water-level accessibility of ramps and channels changing frequently, dicey weather only adds complication.
Keep an eye on weather apps and websites, and obey any warnings or directions from the local authorities on the lake.
If you're out on the water and a storm breaks out, the National Parks Service advises you to seek shelter in a protected cove immediately and wait until the storm passes.
Monitor hazards below the surface
On lakes and reservoirs with lower water levels, objects and land formations that have been long buried may now be much closer to the surface.
Many boaters will purchase and install sonar or "depth sounders" on their boats so they can identify any possible hazards as they're on the water, according to Motorboat and Yachting magazine.
Another way to keep track of possible underwater issues is through apps like Lake Genius.
The x-ray view can show you what's beneath the water's surface. By using current water levels, the app calculates which rocks, ledges, and terrain are within nine feet of the surface. This depth is where most boats and houseboats have hulls and drive systems which can be easily damaged by rocks and other formations.
Obey proximity laws
When water levels are below ideal, keeping your distance from other boats and people is important.
Channels and ramps are more likely to be crowded and chaotic. To avoid accidents or injuries, follow proximity laws.
In Utah, boaters are required to go 5 mph or slower within 150 feet of other boaters, skiers, ramps, docks, swimming areas, and people in the water.
Plan for fuel and range
Lower water levels can close ramps and marinas which may add distance between open entry points.
In some cases, fuel docks may be temporarily closed or relocated.
If you're heading out on the water, be prepared with a full tank of fuel and plan your day appropriately.
Factor in detours around shallow areas or closed channels — you may end up taking the long way in and out of the lake.

Plan ahead with Lake Genius
The Lake Genius app was created to help Utah boaters enjoy the season safely.
Whether you have cell service or not, you can get the latest update on the lake's water levels, underwater hazards, and points of interest.
Additionally, you can plan your excursion knowing where the marinas, fuel docks, and beaches are.
Different lakes will have different attractions, such as slot canyons, petroglyphs, beaches, hiking trailheads, and fishing spots: Lake Genius can help you find the fun places to stop and explore on your adventure.
