SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is holding its 196th Annual General Conference Saturday, April 4, and Sunday, April 5.

Elder Clark G. Gilbert — Come home

In his first general conference talk as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Clark G. Gilbert said he has pledged his life to be a witness of Christ. He shared his witness of Christ as a "redeemer and repairer" and of Christ's invitation to "come home."Elder Gilbert told the stories of people he ministered to who had joined or come back to the church after encouragement and invitations from local leaders.

A journey home starts with anchoring with Christ. He said Christ is the only one who can restore light and joy in someone's life."To those who are struggling to come home, know that it is the Savior who is the one calling you back. In the end, everyone must make their own choices to come home," Elder Gilbert said.

Oaks at Brigham Young University where students who had an empty seat next to them turned on their phone flashlights to help others find a seat.As he held his own flashlight up in the Conference Center, Elder Gilbert said it was as if the students were saying they had saved a seat "just for you.""I witness that Christ is our Redeemer. When we fall short, he repairs the breaches in our lives. The Savior loves all of us and is tenderly calling for you and me to come home," Elder Gilbert said.— Emily Ashcraft

Sister Kristin M. Yee — Ministering: That ye love one another as I have loved you

Sister Kristin M. Yee, second counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency, shared a story about how ministering brothers helped her father through "a very low point in his life" by inviting him and his wife to come to the temple with them. Soon after, her father became a temple worker.She saw her father change during this time, improving his health, attending the needs of others, and improving his relationship with God and others."Because these humble and devoted disciples of the Savior quietly ministered to a seemingly lost and dejected man, my family and I have been eternally blessed," she said.Sister Yee explained that by ministering, members of the church are acting as the Savior's hands to bless and heal whole families, not just individuals. Ministering also allows members to feel that peace and healing in their own lives.

But we can choose to love and minister as the Savior would," she added. She shared that ministering allows for each member of the church to be taken care of on an individual level, as Jesus Christ would care for them.

lder Patrick Kearon of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles opened his talk by reflecting on his own first calling, when he had been a new member of the church for just a week. During his entry into the church, and the week following his new calling, members of the church raised their hands to sustain him as a new member and then again in his new calling.Over the course of his church experience, Elder Kearon determined that service in the church gives members a chance to develop Christlike virtues. "I have learned over and over again that — whatever our offering — in the Lord's economy, we always come out ahead."

— GeneralConference (@ldsconf) April 4, 2026The sustaining of the leaders of the church, whether local or churchwide, gives members a chance to strengthen others whom they can grow to love over the months and years of service. Even the original apostles, Peter, Andrew, James and John, needed support from the Savior, which allowed them to take the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world following the Savior's resurrection. That support allows them to serve others, which in turn, serves God."It isn't really where we serve," Elder Kearon said, "but how, that matters to the Lord."After explaining this, Elder Kearon voiced his own support and sustaining of President Dallin H. Oaks, newly sustained prophet of the church. He was not "merely filling an assignment," but instead joining with the Savior of the world in his infinite redeeming work.

President Dallin H. Oaks — Introduction

President Dallin H. Oaks opened the Saturday morning session of the 196th Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by addressing the 17 million members worldwide, introducing the Solemn Assembly: the sustaining of the members of the First Presidency, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and other senior leaders.This assembly occurs only after a new president and prophet of the church has been called.
