THE GRAND CANYON STATE – Arizona is no stranger to dust storms. Known as haboobs, they can be miles long and reach thousands of feet in height. Storms like this occur most often during the monsoon season, which is typically between June and September.
What causes these walls of dust? It's the wild winds that are kicked up by thunderstorms. The flatter and drier the terrain, the greater the chance of a dust storm.

As you can imagine, visibility plummets to zero in a storm like this. Driving is risky, flights are canceled and power outages can occur. The only good news is that they usually don't last too long. Within 15-20 minutes, you can usually emerge from your home and see the sky again.
The storm in this video occurred in the Queen Creek area. I don't know how long this particular haboob lasted, but it seems like the town's buildings definitely got a good sand blasting from the storm.
