There are moments in the automotive world when the right vehicle arrives at exactly the right time. The 2026 Ford Maverick Hybrid with all-wheel drive is one of those.

With gas prices remaining unpredictable, and the cost of just about everything feeling — and in most cases, is — higher than it used to be, many new vehicles have crept well beyond what the average buyer can afford. In today's car market, it's not uncommon for full-size trucks to easily top $70,000 or more, with many midsize SUVs following in their tracks.

And that's one area where the Maverick Hybrid shines.

Ford's smallest pickup has been a huge success since it launched a few years ago, and for 2026, it continues to hit the sweet spot of versatility, capability and accessibility. The hybrid also offers all-wheel drive — a must for Utah drivers — all the while still delivering outstanding fuel economy, a surprisingly low price and the kind of versatility that makes it easy, and fun to live with every day.

After spending a week behind the wheel of the Maverick Hybrid AWD, one thing became clear: this isn't just a good truck. It's one of the most sensible new vehicles you can buy right now, period — especially with Ford's Truck Month Sales Event going on.

Here are just a few reasons:

Fuel economy that saves the day — and your wallet

One of the main reasons you'll want to consider the Maverick Hybrid is the fuel economy. It's excellent.

The Maverick Hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce a combined 191 horsepower. That may not sound like much on paper, but in practice, it feels very well-suited to this compact truck. I've also driven the more powerful, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder Maverick, and I definitely prefer the hybrid. It's so smooth, punchy and efficient, I didn't miss the extra power at all.

Even with all-wheel drive, the Maverick Hybrid still delivers fuel economy that rivals many compact sedans. Real-world driving makes it even more impressive. Around town — where hybrids tend to shine — the Maverick sips fuel in a way that will have you forgetting it's a truck. In my week, I averaged just over 33 mpg in my 200 miles of combined driving, but the hybrid is rated at 39 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway and 36 mpg in combined driving.

In a time where fuel costs can quickly add up, driving a truck that can easily deliver 35-40 miles per gallon in everyday use feels a bit like an ace up your sleeve when it comes to easing the pressure on your paycheck.

A price that makes sense

And as great as fuel economy is, it's even better in something that's affordable.

The Maverick has always stood out because of its price, and that continues with the 2026 model. The Maverick still starts in the $20,000 range. My Lariat trim, which was pretty loaded with all the tech and features you could want, including Ford Co-Pilot Assist 2.0, just barely crested over $41,000. Pretty great, considering Kelley Blue Book reports the average new car price is near $50,000. This alone makes the Maverick one of the best values on the road today.

For buyers who want the practicality of a pickup but don't want a massive monthly payment — or gas bill — the Maverick fills a space in the market that very few vehicles compete in. It's practical transportation that still feels attainable — without missing out on much in terms of tech, capability and comfort.

Small truck, big capability

One of the most impressive things about the Maverick is how much capability Ford has packed into such a compact footprint.

For example, my Maverick Hybrid tester, when equipped with the $745 4K Tow Package, can tow up to 4,000 pounds. And from what I hear, it's pretty good at it, too.

Erik Johnson of Motor Trend wrote, "The AWD Maverick Hybrid even tows well, and you can now double its tugging capacity to 4,000 pounds with the 4K Tow package. We didn't tow that much weight, but we did pull 1,500 pounds' worth of jet skis, and the truck drove as if they weren't even there. Tow/Haul mode is programmed well, igniting the engine whenever you move away from a stop (the hybrid will often start and cruise in electric-only mode) and increasing regenerative braking when you lift off the gas. I've personally towed in larger trucks that didn't tow this well even at half or less of their capacity."

Coupled with a maximum payload capacity of 1,500 pounds, the Maverick is a pretty capable little truck. It's more than enough for the kinds of jobs for which most people actually use their trucks, like hauling home improvement supplies, bikes and camping gear or weekend adventure equipment.

The 4.5-foot bend may not be massive, but it's definitely useful. Ford designed the Maverick's bed with clever built-in features like integrated outlets, storage slots, tie downs and a multi-position tailgate. Oh, and yes, it accommodates several sheets of standard-sized plywood.

In other words, the Maverick is exactly the right size for most people.

Surprisingly fun to drive

Efficiency and practicality are great, but life is too short to drive boring cars (just ask my wife), and thankfully, the Maverick is not that.

Largely thanks to the electric motor, the Maverick has a nice, smooth boost of torque right off the line. Around town, that instant response makes the truck feel lively and effortless in most situations.

"The Maverick proves value doesn't have to be boring," said Marc Urbano of Car and Driver.

The Maverick also benefits from a carlike driving experience. Because it's built on a unibody platform rather than a traditional body-on-frame design, it rides more like a crossover than a regular pickup. This means smoother handling, less body bounce over bumps and an overall driving experience that feels comfortable and predictable. This is a truck that is easy — and fun — to drive every day.

A functional, comfortable interior

Step inside the Maverick and you'll find an interior that focuses more on function than flash, but that's not a bad thing. It's simple, clean and intuitive and feels wide open in the front of the cabin, with durable materials and easy-to-clean surfaces.

The rear seat space is good, too. Families will appreciate the surprisingly accommodating rear seat, which can comfortably seat three small children. Underseat storage adds another layer of practicality, perfect for stashing backpacks, tools or groceries.

In addition, there are storage spaces virtually everywhere — from large door pockets to clever cubbies throughout the cabin.

The seats — as is almost always the case with Ford — are soft and comfortable for long and short drives.

Ford Truck Month makes it an even better time to buy

If the Maverick Hybrid wasn't already appealing enough, this month's timing might make it even more attractive.

Ford's annual Truck Month Sales Event promotions bring some of the best incentives of the year on pickups, including financing deals, lease offers and other discounts. For buyers considering a Maverick, this could be the best time to take a closer look.

The right truck for right now

The automotive world is full of vehicles that promise bigger engines, larger screens and ever-higher price tags. But sometimes, what people really need — and may even want — is something simple. Easy. Practical. Light on the wallet.

The 2026 Ford Maverick Hybrid with all-wheel drive feels like the antidote to the high costs and excesses of the modern world.

It's efficient when gas prices matter, it's affordable when budgets feel tight, it's capable enough for most tasks and it's easy to drive and enjoyable to live with every day. In short, it's a truck designed for the realities of life in 2026. And as of now, that makes it one of the most relevant and intriguing vehicles on the road.

As Erik Johnson of Motor Trend wrote, "The Ford Maverick AWD Hybrid doesn't alter what the Maverick is — it completes it. From daily commuting and snowy driveways to towing small toys and dirt-road detours, this is the do-everything configuration the lineup has been missing … The Maverick was already one of the smartest trucks you could buy. Now it's also one of the most versatile."
