Winter in Utah arrives with an energy all its own.

Snow transforms the mountains, lights glow across city streets and calendars fill with beloved traditions.

But with so many events packed into just a few months, it's easy to feel like you have to do it all. The truth is you don't. Even one or two outings can create memories that last far beyond the season.

Whether you spend most of your winter on the slopes or prefer to stay warm with indoor festivities, the Wasatch Front offers something for every schedule and budget. From longtime traditions to new favorites, here are some of the best ways to enjoy the holiday season and the months that follow. Some are even free!

Downtown Farmers Market Winter Market

If you're hunting for a unique gift while supporting local small businesses, it's hard to beat the Downtown Farmers Market, Winter Market. You can also pick up produce and pantry items for winter gatherings and get-togethers.

The Winter Market runs until Apr. 18 on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Festival of Trees

The Festival of Trees holds a special place in many people's hearts and has been going strong for 55 years. It's all for a good cause — supporting Primary Children's Hospital — and gives Utahns a chance to enjoy beautifully decorated trees, wreaths and gingerbread creations while contributing to a meaningful mission.

This year's festival runs Dec. 2-6. Visit the festival's website for tickets and hours.

Christmas Carol Sing-Along at the Delta Center

Holiday music hits differently when you're singing with thousands of other voices. The annual Christmas Carol Sing-Along at the Delta Center offers an uplifting night of music hosted by the Larry H. and Gail Miller family and The Larry H. Miller Company.

It's one night only: Dec. 16 from 6 p.m. to midnight, with special musical guests, The Lower Lights. Admission is free, so arrive early for the best seats.

Luminaria at Thanksgiving Point

Thanksgiving Point's Luminaria has become one of Utah's most eye-catching traditions. Guests wander through 50 acres covered in 8 million lights and oversized displays, including snowmen brought to life in the new Enchanted Castle projection show.

Dance at the Snow Glow Dance Party and snack on famous donut holes as you take in the sights. Luminaria runs until Jan. 10 with special pricing for large groups.

ZooLights at Utah's Hogle Zoo

Utah's Hogle Zoo invites guests back for its annual ZooLights celebration, complete with photo-worthy displays, tasty holiday treats, a free picture with Santa Claus and a chance to see the zoo at night.

You may not spot many animals, but the lights are worth the trip.

ZooLights runs on select nights until Jan. 4 from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

Loveland Living Planet Aquarium Lantern Festival

See the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium in a whole new way at the Aquarium Lantern Festival, held in the outdoor Rio Tinto Kennecott Plaza. Larger-than-life lanterns inspired by nature illuminate the space, creating an unforgettable nighttime experience.

The event runs until Jan. 10 from 5:30 to 10 p.m. and includes admission to the aquarium.

Craft Lake City Holiday Market

For a winter outing with something for everyone, head to the Craft Lake City Holiday Market Dec. 5-6 at Union Station in Ogden.

With more than 150 local artists, vintage vendors, performers and entrepreneurs, it's a great place to find handmade gifts or simply enjoy the atmosphere.

There's plenty of food, entertainment and even a visit from Santa.

Ballet West's The Nutcracker

Ballet West's acclaimed production of "The Nutcracker" is such an iconic part of the season that it's been designated a Living Historic Landmark.

For many families, it's a must-see tradition. The production runs until the end of December, and tickets often sell out, so plan ahead.

Gallivan Center Ice Rink

If you're craving fresh air and festive scenery, the Gallivan Center Ice Rink makes a perfect afternoon or evening outing. Bring your own skates for a discount and enjoy city lights as you glide across the ice.

The Ballpark at America First Square Holiday Lights

South Jordan's Ballpark at America First Square offers a bright new tradition. The ballpark is transformed into a winter wonderland with frequent light shows, interactive games and a nine-hole mini golf course. It's a family-friendly way to celebrate throughout the season.

The holiday lights run until Jan. 3. Ticket information available on the Ballpark's website.

Last Hurrah at The Gateway

Ring in the new year at The Gateway's Last Hurrah, a free New Year's Eve celebration open to the public from 8 p.m. to midnight. Expect buskers, pop-up bars and live performances on an outdoor stage as you count down to 2026.

The night concludes with Salt Lake City's only New Year's fireworks show.

Sundance Film Festival

The Sundance Film Festival has long been one of Utah's signature winter events, drawing filmmakers and film lovers from around the world.

If you haven't experienced Sundance in Utah, this is your last chance before the festival moves to Boulder, Colo., in 2027.

Along with screenings, visitors can enjoy filmmaker Q&As, panel discussions and a uniquely energetic atmosphere that takes over Park City and Salt Lake City.
