CEDAR CITY — A motorcyclist died in a three-vehicle crash on I-15 Sunday night.
Emergency crews responded to a report of a crash on northbound I-15 about 3 miles south of Cedar City shortly after 7:45 p.m., according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
State troopers say the driver of a Suzuki motorcycle crashed into the rear end of a pickup truck on the freeway. The impact caused the pickup to strike the rear end of an SUV also traveling in the same direction. The driver of the motorcycle, whose name and age were not immediately released, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. No other injuries were reported.
It wasn't clear what caused the crash, which remains under investigation.
Fatal motorcycle crashes are on the rise across Utah. While roadway fatalities as of Sunday are down 8% from the same point last year, there have been more than 60 motorcycle fatalities — the most in at least a decade, according to Utah Department of Public Safety data.
State officials have explored ways to reverse the trend, launching a program this year that urges motorcyclists to wear proper safety gear, check their equipment and slow down, while encouraging motorists to be mindful of motorcycles on the road.
