SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's first modular apartment complex is going up in downtown Salt Lake City. The groundbreaking project is the latest effort to help homeless people transition into housing or out of addiction.

The Other Side Village Prep Academy is being constructed at 648 E. 100 South in Salt Lake City. It's a four-story, 33,860-square foot apartment complex that will house 100 people. Builders said the 48 modules making up the complex have already been assembled in Irontown Modular's factory in Spanish Fork.

Each module arrives on site with interior work done and appliances inside. Once each module is stacked and construction is complete, the complex will take in people directly off the street, who might be facing medical challenges or issues with mental health and drug addiction.

"The participants here will learn all those skills necessary to be able to live an independent life and thrive," said Tim Stay, CEO of The Other Side Foundation.

The Other Side Foundation said the prep academy will be a stepping stone to more stable housing. Those coming there will stay anywhere from six to 12 months. If they demonstrate the ability to live independently, they can qualify to live in The Other Side Village being built just off Redwood Road.

Each of the modules was being put in place on Tuesday, but people won't begin living in them for another three months.
