CEDAR CITY — A Cedar City family is going public with their 12-year-old daughter's brain cancer journey, a path they say is marked with both positive and negative experiences.

During a recent hourlong interview at their home in Cedar City, Steven and Maddie Shorter told Cedar City News the first hint of trouble came in May of 2024, shortly after their daughter Brooklynn's youth softball team won the league championship.

"She lives for softball," Steven Shorter said. "Right after they won the championship, she started getting these headaches."

Brooklynn was initially given migraine medicine by her family physician, who referred her to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City.

"When we tried to get her in through the referral, they were way backed up," Steven Shorter added. "We couldn't get her on the schedule until April of 2025."
