Your hard work and real-world experience deserve recognition. That's why Utah Valley University makes education more accessible through its Credit for Prior Learning program, an initiative designed to honor your accomplishments and help you achieve your academic and career goals faster.

What is Credit for Prior Learning?

Credit for Prior Learning allows students to earn college credit for learning that takes place outside traditional classrooms. Whether it's professional experience, military service, certifications, or independent study, CPL bridges the gap between your knowledge and your degree.

Why Credit for Prior Learning matters

Credit for Prior Learning is a game-changer for adult learners. "Learning happens in more places than a traditional classroom, so we want to apply that learning toward people's educational goals," explains Colleen Sorensen, director of student assessment and Credit for Prior Learning at UVU. By making Credit for Prior Learning opportunities more transparent and accessible, UVU ensures that students can save both time and money while earning their degrees.

Credit for Prior Learning in Action: UVU's Champions

Several UVU departments have embraced Credit for Prior Learning, integrating it into their programs to support students from diverse backgrounds:

  • Technology management: Recognizing the expertise of adult learners, this department has developed a variety of Credit for Prior Learning options. "Students who earn CPL credit are focused and complete their degrees earlier," says Susan Thackeray, department chair.
  • Strategic management and operations: Department Chair Lynn Adams encourages students to demonstrate their knowledge through work experience, certifications, and portfolio reviews. "We tie your experience to specific classes, awarding you credit via the CPL process," she explains. Adams adds, "Many of our students come with a wealth of experience that aligns directly with our coursework. CPL allows us to recognize and validate their expertise, which motivates them to persist and succeed in their educational journey."
  • Information management: By leveraging tools like Certiport for Microsoft Office Specialist certifications, this program allows students to turn their tech skills into academic credit. "This approach saves students time and money," notes Professor Cynthia Krebs.
  • Emergency services: For students with backgrounds in public safety or military service, Associate Professor Kevin McCarthy shares that Credit for Prior Learning helps them earn credit for training and certifications, expediting their path to a degree.
  • Digital media: Prior experience in fields like animation, digital cinema, or web development can translate into credit through portfolio assessments. "Students bring valuable work experience into our classrooms," says Associate Professor Kim P. Brown.

UVU's CPL program is about more than just saving time and money. It's about validating your experience and helping you realize your potential.
