Sardine Canyon under traction restriction due to winter weather conditions

BRIGHAM CITY — Travel on U.S. 89/91 through Sardine Canyon is restricted in both directions Thursday afternoon, with only vehicles equipped with traction devices being allowed through.

The restriction was called for after weather conditions forced traffic to a standstill, according to Utah Highway Patrol.

Traction device requirements in Sarding Canyon were put in place earlier Thursday, as rain in the valley turned to snow at higher elevations, a product of the holiday winter storm moving across the state.

At 9:40 a.m. the Utah Highway Patrol reported already seeing 30 to 40 crashes across the state, with the number continuing to grow.

Correction: An earlier version quoted from an outdated social media post that reported whiteout conditions. The closure was due to winter weather, but not whiteout conditions.
