Unemployment in Salt Lake County sat below 3% in March 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There is no better time for job seekers to find a pathway to a high-demand career. Employers from every industry are looking for people with skills to join their workforce in high-wage careers, including health care, manufacturing, IT, electronics, truck driving, automotive, construction, welding and more.

Whether individuals are just finishing high school or have been working for many years, the key to a rewarding and sustainable career is learning the skills employers seek.

At Salt Lake Technical College (SLTech), students can choose from more than 60 programs leading to specific careers employers seek to fill. With little to no experience in the field, students will learn the skills that prepare them for entry-level positions with a path to advancement.

There are hundreds of jobs posted monthly in Salt Lake County that require the skills SLTech programs teach. Instructors are industry experts who can help students with important information about the areas they want to enter. SLTech programs are designed to equip you with the skills you need for success in the real world. They focus on hands-on learning in instructional labs that mirror real workplace environments. This means you'll gain practical, career-ready skills that employers want.

Utah residents live in one of the strongest economic growth states in the country, as shown in several rankings in the last few years. Anyone who wants to start a career or move into something new can find the training and support they need.

SLTech can show students the earning potential of specific occupations, how many job openings are in Utah, and who the potential employers are. SLTech programs include opportunities for industry internships so students can get a fundamental understanding of the career for which they are training.

Programs are designed and continually updated in close collaboration with industry experts. Equipment and technology are consistently updated to ensure students are prepared for what they will find on the job. SLTech students can be confident they are gaining the most current knowledge and skills employers seek.

Training and education that fit lifestyle demands

Many students who start programs at SLTech continue to work while they attend classes. Programs are designed and scheduled to work around various life commitments, including full- and part-time work, family, and other responsibilities. Students range in age from 18 to 55, and many bring prior skills and knowledge. Most SLTech programs can be completed in a matter of months, and students have the flexibility to attend school when it fits their schedule, including evening and weekend classes. Class sizes are small with individualized attention.

Discover the power of 'upskilling' with SLTech

A study published by Gallup noted that, on average, individuals who gain new skills increase their salary by 8.6%, according to the American Upskilling Study reported by PR Newswire. It also found that job satisfaction increased with more skill attainment.

As technology continues to change and advance more quickly than ever, learning new skills – or 'upskilling' – is critical to any worker's career path. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers change their careers five to seven times in their working life. Whether an individual is looking to change careers or advance in a path they have already chosen, the key is learning new skills.

SLTech is part of Salt Lake Community College and provides technical education to residents of Salt Lake County for the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE). Most technical programs can be completed in a matter of months. Tuition is affordable, and the College offers a variety of scholarships. Many students can qualify for financial aid to assist them as they learn. Students who complete programs will be prepared for careers with sustainable salaries to support individuals and families.
