New Sunday School leaders include men involved in church education and an NFL player

SALT LAKE CITY — At the opening of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' 194th Annual General Conference, church leaders announced and members sustained a new Sunday School presidency and 11 new general authority seventies.

President Paul V. Johnson is the new Sunday School general president, and will begin his service on Aug. 1, with his counselors, Brother Chad H Webb and Brother Gabriel W. Reid.

President Johnson is from Gainesville, Florida, and has nine children with his wife, Jill Johnson. He has served as a general authority seventy since April 2005. During that time, he served in area presidencies in Chile and Europe and in the presidency of the Seventy.

He served as commissioner of the Church Educational System for nine years, and has a doctorate of education degree from Utah State University, in addition to three degrees from Brigham Young University.

The first counselor in the presidency, Brother Webb, is from southeastern Idaho and currently lives in Layton. He has six children with his wife, Kristi Webb.

Brother Webb has served as an administrator of the church's Seminaries and Institutes of Religion since 2008, and was recently released as a stake president.

Brother Reid was born in American Samoa and played football for BYU and for the Chicago Bears in the NFL. He owned a construction management company. He and his wife, Heather Reid, have four children.

He is currently serving as a mission president in the Australia Sydney Mission.

The 11 men sustained as new general authority seventies come from eight different countries.

  • Gregorio E. Casillas, from Mexico.
  • Aroldo B. Cavalcante, from Brazil.
  • I. Raymond Egbo, from Nigeria.
  • D. Martin Goury, from the Ivory Coast.
  • Karl D. Hirst, from England.
  • Christopher H. Kim, from Korea.
  • Sandino Roman, from Mexico
  • Steven D. Shumway, from Arizona.
  • Michael B. Strong, from Centerville, Utah.
  • Sergio R. Vargas, from Chile.
