Since its announcement in 2019, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been keeping a watchful eye on the ongoing renovation of Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake. While the full renovation is expected to be complete by 2026, portions of the area have slowly started reopening.

Among those recently reopened areas is the plaza near the Church Office Building, where the Church raised international flags from every nation in the world on April 3. According to the Church's newsroom, these flags "will be one of several art installations symbolizing the global nature of the Church and its commitment to be a friend to all."

Representing a global church

Utah may be known as the central hub for the Church worldwide, but some people might be surprised to learn that the majority of its members live outside of North America.

After starting with just six members in April 1830, the Church's most recent annual statistical report says that membership has expanded to 17 million members worldwide. Most of those members reside outside of the U.S. and Canada. The Church has also published The Book of Mormon in 113 languages.

You may have even seen their work on display at the Super Bowl LVIII earlier this year. As country singer Reba McEntire sang the National Anthem, a 75- by 150-foot-long American flag made by Colonial Flag took center stage.

"Everyone was just at their own houses, their own Super Bowl parties. But we were all texting each other in our group text after saying 'look our flag, like, there it is," Colonial Flag chief operating officer Jacob Swenson told KSL NewsRadio at the time.

The flag, which took six weeks to make, was not the first of its kind for Colonial Flag or even the biggest the company has ever made. Swenson said they've also done similar flags for other NFL teams, colleges and Utah's canyons.
