OREM — For a team on the cusp of winning a third straight state title, Viewmont's drill squad seemed a bit surprised when their enormous fan support and student section were chanting, "three-peat" at the end of a marathon championship meet Friday night.

Despite winning the previous two titles, 2024 was perhaps as big of an achievement as any.

The Vykelles won the military and show disciplines to claim their third straight 5A state title at the UCCU Center, holding off region rival Bountiful.

"It's always a battle," Viewmont coach Kayla Bagshaw said. "I feel like every team works so hard to get to this point, and everybody comes to fight. But at the end of the day, it's what the girls do out on the floor — and we just told them to fight for it. If they wanted this, they had to fight for it. … I felt like they did that more tonight."

The Vykelles won their third title in program history, cementing a mini-dynasty in the 5A ranks, even with a coaching staff that rotates the head coach role every year.

But team is the motto at Viewmont, and so it is for the dancers, who overcame a fourth-place finish in dance with a first-place finish in military and a crowd-pleaser in show uniquely inspired by Miss Trunchbull from the "Matilda" musical.

Spanish Fork won dance to pace a third-place finish overall, and Maple Mountain and Cyprus rounded out the top five in what many observers called the most competitive final grouping that also included Brighton, Bonneville, Roy and Woods Cross.

"There's a lot of talent out there, and we just had to step up," Bagshaw said.

After finishing second each of the past two seasons following their move to 6A, Farmington broke through to clinch its first state title in the state's top classification by sweeping all three disciplines Friday afternoon at the UCCU Center.

The Nixelles placed first in military, dance and show to snap Bingham's run of four straight 6A titles.

Farmington is the first champion in Utah's top classification not named Bingham or Copper Hills — which won seven straight prior to the Minerettes' recent four-peat — since Hillcrest won what was then the 5A title in 2009.

Bingham took second in all three disciplines en route to a runner-up finish, while Layton, Davis and Pleasant Grove rounded out the top five from a finalist group that also included Corner Canyon, Westlake and Syracuse.
