While the term might evoke scenes of blacksmithing in medieval Europe, there's nothing more modern – or American – about apprenticeships. In fact, according to the Department of Labor, there were nearly 550,000 registered apprentices in 2021. And with more young people realizing the value of getting quality, hands-on vocational training – while also receiving a paycheck – that number only stands to grow.
Apprenticeships are an education option that combines classroom theory with hands-on experience. Today, there are many vocations that offer apprenticeship programs — and many of those in high demand are available through Mountainland Technical College. In fact, Utah's five-time Best of State technical college (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023) offers three exceptional apprenticeship programs in the fields of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), electrical, and plumbing. They all provide the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, valuable knowledge and mentorship from seasoned professionals.
Electrical Apprenticeship
The Electrical Apprenticeship program at Mountainland Technical College is designed to equip students with a strong foundation in theoretical knowledge. Seasoned electricians, who have dedicated decades to the industry, deliver comprehensive classroom instruction covering a wide range of topics including electrical circuits, wiring systems, safety procedures and emerging technologies.
By sharing real-world examples and practical insights, these experienced instructors help apprentices gain a deep understanding of electrical concepts. Of course, this program also goes beyond the classroom, providing ample opportunities for hands-on learning. Under the guidance of skilled electricians, apprentices engage in practical exercises that mirror real-world scenarios, allowing them to develop essential technical skills. By working closely with mentors, apprentices also receive invaluable industry insights and guidance, fostering personal and professional growth.
HVAC Apprenticeship
The HVAC Apprenticeship program at Mountainland Technical College stands out for its focus on practical training. Dedicated lab facilities equipped with a range of HVAC systems and equipment provide students with hands-on experience. Working directly with various components, tools and instruments used in the industry, apprentices learn to diagnose, repair, install and maintain HVAC systems.
The curriculum aligns with the latest standards and guidelines set by respected organizations such as the Department of Energy (DOE), HVAC Standards in Excellence, and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). In addition to physical lab facilities, students use simulation software to practice troubleshooting and system analysis in a virtual environment, allowing them to gain experience before working with actual equipment and giving them confidence for real-world application.
Plumbing Apprenticeship
The Plumbing Apprenticeship program at Mountainland Technical College is recognized for its excellence in training well-rounded plumbers. In fact, the program has received accolades from both Utah Best of State and by the Utah Trades Association.
With a focus on solid education – not just course completion – this program offers apprentices the benefit of small class sizes and teachers who genuinely care about the success of their students. The curriculum is designed to match classroom lessons with practical applications, ensuring students can immediately apply what they learn to real-world scenarios.
Plumbing apprentices also have the opportunity to test out early after completing the fourth year with support and encouragement from dedicated teachers. And for high school seniors, day classes make getting a head start very convenient.
