This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

The business known today as Atkinson Furniture & Upholstery bears a legacy that dates back more than 40 years. In 1964, Brenton Atkinson was working for a motor company and discovered a need for somebody to sew seat covers and cushions.

After taking a correspondence course and learning the basics from a coworker, Brenton started working on seat covers and cushions each night in his garage. However, in a short time, he discovered he was so busy that he couldn't continue making seat covers and still keep up with his other job, so he quit and started his own upholstery shop. Atkinson Furniture & Upholstery officially opened its doors in Logan in September 1965.

In the early days Brenton focused on automotive upholstery, but he later branched into furniture repair and renovation. After graduating from high school in 1982, Brenton's son, Shawn, joined him in the business. At that time the snowmobile industry was booming, so the Atkinsons did a lot of work on snowmobile seats.

Today, Brenton tells me that he and Shawn do upholstery work for industries ranging from the automotive industry to the medical and restaurant industries. In 1998, the Atkinsons added an unfinished furniture department to their business, where they sell tables, chairs, dressers and armoires among other items. They also provide warranty work for furniture stores in the Cache Valley.

Over the years, Brenton has built up a great clientele, and referrals have accounted for a major portion of his business. With just Shawn and himself to do the work, Brenton is often backlogged for months, but he is constantly expanding and hopes to eventually increase the furniture portion of his business.

Brenton told me that one of the things that has carried Atkinson Furniture and Upholstery through the years is the guarantee he offers on all his work. Providing only the finest craftsmanship available, Brenton has hundreds of return customers stretching from northern Utah all the way to southern Idaho.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
