THE DOG HOUSE — Sometimes, all you need is love.

That was certainly the case for Chance, a pit bull rescue puppy struggling with an illness that made it difficult for him to eat, leading him to lose a lot of weight.

My family rescued a dog — that we named Luna — when I was in elementary school, after finding her on the side of the road with severely matted fur. From the start, Luna was the sweetest dog and she lived with us long enough to overlap with the lives of two other family dogs.

Lucky for Chance, he has a loving foster family that has helped him through his medical journey.

Chance's foster Mom, Monique, said that she noticed Chance was getting sick after a few days of fostering. A trip to the vet revealed he had swallowed the top of a sippy cup and a baby bottle nipple.

"I was sad knowing that he was so hungry and trying to find food that he was willing to eat something like that," Monique said.

After Chance had a surgery and learned that he could resume his normal eating habits, Monique said his whole demeanor changed.

Another boost in his recovery was daily trips to pick up Monique's niece, Mila, from school.

"To see Chance getting better made me feel really, really happy," Mila said.

Mila added that her favorite thing about Chance is the way he wags his tail when he sees her after school — and when she feeds him ice cream.

"My favorite thing to do with Chance is race," Mila said. "Chance is one of my best friends."

For Monique, seeing Chance bond to her and Mila said everything.

"To see that he just immediately trusted us and just took us in as his family and took my niece in and became friends with her, just was really heartwarming," she said.

People can follow along on Monique and Chance's journey on TikTok and Instagram.
