There's nothing wrong with the classic trunk-or-treat standby: transforming the back of your car into a giant monster mouth. But if you really want to up the wow factor this year — and earn your neighbors' respect and admiration — give one of these clever car decorating ideas a try.
'It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown'
This trunk-or-treat idea has it all. It's nostalgic, it's on theme for Halloween and it's easy to put together. Turn your trunk into a pumpkin patch fit for the Great Pumpkin, from the beloved Charlie Brown movie. Gather up your gourds (real or fake) and hang a sign that says, "Welcome, Great Pumpkin!" Include a cutout or two from the cartoon if you really want to sell it. Extra fall decor to give it a little zhuzh doesn't hurt either!

Wizarding World of Harry Potter
Now's the time when you can put all that Harry Potter swag your kids (or you) have amassed to good use. All you really need are stacks of books, candles, a cauldron and maybe a few pumpkins. Take it to the next level with an interactive game of Quidditch to make those Muggles earn their treats. Or replicate the entrance to Diagon Alley with a fake brick backdrop. Choose your favorite scene from the movie and go Hogwarts-wild.

Right on target
Here's a trunk-or-treat decoration idea that's sure to entice the moms: Dress your trunk up to look like everyone's favorite big box superstore. Get some red and white balloons, make a Target sign and put on a red polo and khakis. It's a guaranteed winner. Bonus points if you decorate with items you actually purchased at Target.

Candyland
Like most kids, you probably grew up playing the Candyland board game. Given that the object of the game is to reach the candy castle, it's a suitable theme for your trunk-or-treat decorations. Blow up some colorful balloons, lay out a path of colored paper leading to your car and add a Candyland banner. You're all set! Be as simple or elaborate as you like with this one.

Comic book superhero
Your trunk-or-treat is bound to have a few costumed superheroes trotting around, so they'll love posing for pictures in front of your superhero-themed car. Mimic the old-school comic book style with a city skyline for a backdrop and plenty of signs with words such as "Kapow!" and "Bam!"

Movie theater
Bring the excitement of the movies to your trunk-or-treat with theater-themed decor. Hang up a fake screen and blow up some yellow and white balloons for popcorn. Roll out a red carpet if you're feeling fancy. Better yet, set up a little projector and show some kid-friendly Halloween movies.

Yard sale
This idea might be the most genius one on the list because it won't cost you a dime. Not everyone can spend oodles of cash on trunk-or-treat decorations for their car, but just about everyone has random stuff lying around the house. Collect old pots and pans, gadgets and knick-knacks and set up a yard sale display. Be extra clever and call it a Junk-or-Treat.
