Here's why many Washington County residents should expect a 'substantial' property tax hike

ST. GEORGE — One after another, St. George residents stood before the City Council on Aug. 18 in opposition to a proposed property tax increase for public safety funding. While city officials maintained there had been no increase in property taxes by the city in 35 years, some residents said that wasn't true due to the substantial increase they saw hitting their property taxes this year.

They were half-right.

While the city of St. George hasn't changed the amount of property taxes it collects since the late 1990s, other factors came together this year to create a dramatic jump in property taxes for residents.

Washington County Assessor Tom Durrant sent notices to county residents warning of a "significant" increase in property taxes earlier this month. The increase is due to a number of factors he said came together in a "perfect storm" that has resulted in some residents seeing anywhere from a 15% to 30% hike in their property taxes over last year.
