THE BLACKTOP â I'm not proud of any of this, but I've come to accept a few hard truths that the animal kingdom threw in my face.
I've learned I'm probably not as smart as some dolphins. I've learned some dogs are a better parent to a human child than I am. I even found out that an owl can ride a skateboard better than me.
But for some reason this latest one hurts my pride more than all the others. That's because Wrinkle the duck ran a long-distance race and finished. I am now lazier and have less cardiovascular endurance than a duck. A house duck at that. This isn't even a duck living out in the wild and constantly fighting for survival. I am outmatched by a duck who has a human that feeds her and coddles her on the regular.
I don't know the exact distance and I am aware that I wrote "marathon" in the headline. It was a ploy to get you to click, because the headline "Duck runs an indeterminable distance" doesn't have the same cache. So, deal with it, but don't act like you aren't glad you clicked into the story and saw the video.
Regardless, it's impressive to see a duck running a race, but the fact she finished faster than I would doesn't sit well with me. There are some things in my life that I need to change. Not getting outdone by animals on mundane human tasks seems like a good place to start.
But I'll give my accolades to Wrinkle on her achievement. My sincere lack of accomplishing simple, everyday tasks should not take away from Wrinkle's moment. I'm sorry I made it about me again, Wrinkle. Congratulations.
