Every year, Pantone picks a color that they feel best represents current events and what people are hoping for in the new year. Apparently, this year called for something different because they did something they've never done before: They created an entirely new color.

And for 2022, it's pretty fitting.

"The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer," said Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute.

"Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place."

So, if innovation and transformation sound like your kind of thing, you'll love the Pantone Color of the Year for 2022: Very Peri. (Technically, it's PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri.)

It's an unapologetically bold blend of blues and reds that creates a bright shade of purple periwinkle. According to Pantone, "Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression."

To help you flex those courageously creative and imaginative muscles, here are a few ideas for how you can incorporate Pantone's Color of the Year into your home.

Inject some personality into your furnishings

Muted tones and boring colors were so 2021. Time to swap out that old rug, armchair or lamp with something bright and new! And if you're not ready to go all-out Very Peri but you want a dash of a similar color, perhaps you could pick out some carpet in a more subtle shade of purple. Who knows? It might become your new favorite flooring.

Paint it on an accent wall

If you aren't intimidated by big changes, try livening up a room with a periwinkle-painted accent wall. You can also pick a small room (such as the laundry room or a bathroom) to try it out first. Since it's meant to promote a feeling of peace and comfort, periwinkle might be a good choice for your study or bedroom as well.

Add a pop of color with accessories

The easiest way to incorporate this year's color is to choose Very Peri-toned accessories you can scatter throughout the house. Placemats, candles, pottery, flowers (fake or real) — they can all add a nice pop of color to an otherwise drab room.

Take it outside

Don't forget about the exterior of your home! Planting pots and outdoor cushions are more opportunities to include Pantone's brand-new hue for 2022.

Pick out colors that go well with the color of the year

Instead of overwhelming your living space with periwinkle, you might choose to sprinkle it in as more of a decorative spice than a main dish. If that's the case, focus on choosing colors that go well with it so that you can add (or take away) Very Peri decor at will. According to House Beautiful, white, pink, beige, blue, gray, green and orange with yellow all mix well with the color of the year. (Keep that in mind as you pick out paint colors or carpets and flooring.)
