APPLE DROPS FORTNITE FROM APP STORE OVER DIRECT PAYMENT PLAN

UNDATED (AP) — Apple has dropped the hugely popular “Fortnite” game from its App Store after the game’s developer introduced a direct payment plan that bypasses Apple’s platform. Apple takes a 30% cut from in-app revenue purchases, which has long been a sore spot with developers. “Fortnite” is free, but users can pay for in game accoutrements like weapons and skins. The game’s developer, Epic Games, said in a blog post it was introducing Epic Direct payments, a direct-payment plan for Apple’s iOS and Google Play that bypasses the App Store. Apple said the service violated its guidelines. Google did not immediately return a request for comment.

TIKTOK AND ITS EMPLOYEES PREPARE TO FIGHT TRUMP OVER APP BAN

UNDATED (AP) — TikTok and its U.S. employees are planning to take President Donald Trump’s administration to court over a sweeping order that could ban the popular video app, according to a lawyer preparing one of the lawsuits. The employees’ legal challenge to Trump’s executive order will be separate from a pending lawsuit from the company that owns the app, says Mike Godwin, an internet policy lawyer representing the employees. Trump last week ordered sweeping but vague bans on dealings with the Chinese owners of TikTok and WeChat, saying they are a threat to U.S. national security and the economy. Godwin says lawsuits will likely argue Trump’s order is unconstitutional.

FACEBOOK BEEFS UP ANTI-MISINFO EFFORTS AHEAD OF US ELECTION

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -Facebook will start labeling all U.S. posts about voting to send users authoritative information about the elections. The social network began applying the labels to posts about the voting process by federal politicians, including President Donald Trump, last month. Now it’s expanding it to everyone in the country. The move is part of Facebook’s broader effort to combat election-related misinformation on its platform as the U.S. presidential election nears. The company is also launching a voter information hub, similar to one around COVID-19 it says has been seen by “billions” of users around the world.

NASHVILLE AIRPORT INTRODUCES BIOMETRIC IDENTITY TECHNOLOGY

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Nashville International Airport has introduced expedited lanes with biometric technology that replaces the need to use traditional identification documents before air travel. The airport said Wednesday it started offering the touchless technology by CLEAR that uses eyes and fingertips to confirm someone’s identity. Travelers can begin enrolling online and finish at the airport. Once enrolled, people can use CLEAR at 35 airports nationwide, in addition to other venues. The airport says CLEAR is a voluntary membership service and never sells personal information. CLEAR membership costs $15 a month with discounts available for some rewards programs. Family plans are available for an additional $50 per adult annually.
