NEW YORK, Sep 13, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The "Today" show's new co-host Meredith Vieira started her job kidding with partner Matt Lauer in New York, but easily assumed her news role.
Vieira's first day Wednesday included a retrospective, including her history as a Beatles fan, local newscaster, former "60 Minutes" reporter, and nine-year host of "The View," E! Online reported.
Lauer presented an Esquire photograph of Vieira's gams taken earlier in her career and threatened to bob her head in wedding cake frosting.
Vieira called "Today" an institution. "It's a part of Americana and it's so cool to be part of that," she said.
She flattered Lauer, saying, "I feel like it's the first day of school and I'm sitting next to the cutest guy in the class," Vieira said. "I'm going to be 'the broad' in broadcasting."
But when the time came for her to interview Meet the Press host Tim Russert, she proved to viewers she is capable of doing the job of real reporting, E! Online said.
