ACTOR JOHN SAXON DEAD AT 83
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — An actor best-known for starring with Bruce Lee in a popular kung-fu movie has died. John Saxon's wife says her husband died Saturday at their home in Tennessee. Saxon was a versatile actor who was in the films in the “Nightmare on Elm Street” series and was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1966. But for many, his most famous role was as Mr. Roper in “Enter the Dragon” — as a martial arts expert who fought alongside Bruce Lee and Jim Kelly.
REGIS PHILBIN REMEMBERED
NEW YORK (AP) — The man who held the record for more most time logged on TV has died. Regis Philbin died this past Friday at age 88. Philbin hosted “Live!” with co-hosts Kathie Lee and Kelly Ripa, making himself a welcome guest in viewers' homes because of his genial manner — and the show's opening segment, in which he'd launch into stream-of-consciousness rants about his life.
Fellow celebrities flooded social media with tributes to Philbin over the weekend. Among them:
— “Always made me laugh” — Tony Bennett.
— “One of a kind” — Henry Winkler.
— “A lovely man” — Rosie O’Donnell.
— “His wit was only surpassed by his huge heart” — Meredith Vieira.
— “You were the best” — LeVar Burton.
OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND DIES
PARIS (AP) — Olivia de Havilland has died. She was 104 when she died yesterday at her home in Paris. One of her most famous roles was Melanie Wilkes in “Gone With the Wind. She was the last living star of the movie, long considered a Hollywood classic. However the film has fallen out of favor recently as America has become more sensitive to the kind of racist tropes in the film.
NYC POLICE SEARCH FOR SPENCER GRAMMER'S SLASHER
NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities in New York City are trying to find the person who slashed actor Spencer Grammer. She tells US Weekly a man got upset because he couldn't be served at the restaurant where she and a friend were dining. When the man got upset, Grammer says she and the friend tried to intervene — but got cut instead. Grammer says the injuries weren't serious — and she and her friend expect to recover completely.
‘TENET’ WILL OPEN INTERNATIONALLY FIRST
NEW YORK (AP) — In the latest plan for Hollywood’s hopeful return to moviegoing during the pandemic, Warner Bros. will release Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” in an unprecedented fashion. The highly anticipated film will open internationally first on Aug. 26, with a U.S. release in select cities to follow over Labor Day weekend. Warner Bros. on Monday says “Tenet” will arrive in more than 70 countries, including Japan, Russia, much of Europe, Australia and Canada. The staggered release of the $200 million thriller will be tailored to outbreaks of COVID-19. Instead of the usual global launch of a summer blockbuster, “Tenet” will make its way through theaters as they are open.
BOOK SAYS PRINCE WILLIAM AND HARRY CLASHED OVER MARKLE
LONDON (AP) — Imagine telling a family member you were in love and the relative said you were “blindsided by lust." Chances are you'd be royally irked. Imagine how much more royally irked you'd if you were part of the British royal family. A new book says that what happened between Prince William and Prince Harry over the younger sibling's falling in love with Meghan Markle. The book, “Finding Freedom,” says William irked Harry by suggesting his relationship with the biracial American actress was more about sex than love. The book says Harry felt Andrew had a “snobby” attitude toward Markle. The couple has since renounced their royal duties and lives in the Los Angeles area.
OPRAH'S MAGAZINE TO END REGULAR PRINT EDITIONS
UNDATED (AP) — O, The Oprah Magazine is ending its regular monthly print editions with the December 2020 issue after 20 years of publication. Hearst says the brand is not going away but will become more “more digitally-centric,” with “some form of print.” Oprah Winfrey launched O with Hearst in 2000 and today is the editorial director. It is among the country’s most recognizable magazines. Hearst declined to answer why they were dropping the regular print edition, saying only it was a “natural next step.” Magazines are trying to grow their digital properties as print advertising shrinks and people spend more time online.
