CHENGDU, China (AP) — The U.S. closed its consulate in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu on Monday, a victim of the rising tensions between the global powers. China ordered the mission closed in retaliation for a U.S. order to shut down the Chinese Consulate in Houston. The tit-for-tat closings marked a significant escalation in the multiple disputes between the countries over a range of issues, including trade, technology, security and human rights. A State Department statement expressed disappointment, saying the consulate “has stood at the center of our relations with the people in Western China, including Tibet, for 35 years."

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Australia’s hard-hit Victoria state has posted another daily record 532 new COVID-19 cases. The state government leader warned that a lockdown in the city of Melbourne would continue while infected people continued to go to work. Melbourne is almost half way through a six-week lockdown aimed at curbing community spread of coronavirus. Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said the biggest driver of the new infections was people continuing to go to work after showing symptoms. He said the lockdown would not end until people stop going to work and instead get tested.

SELMA, Ala. (AP) — The late U.S. Rep. John Lewis has crossed Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge for the final time as remembrances continue for the civil rights icon. A processional with Lewis’ casket was carried across the bridge Sunday where he and other civil rights marchers were beaten 55 years ago on “Bloody Sunday,” a key event in the fight for voting rights for African Americans. Lewis died July 17 at the age of 80, months after he was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer.

UNDATED (AP) — South Korea has reported 25 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing its national caseload to 14,175 infections and 299 deaths. South Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday said 16 of the new cases were tied to people arriving from abroad. The country in past days have reported dozens of cases among crew members of a Russia-flagged cargo ship docked in the southern port of Busan and hundreds of South Korean construction workers airlifted from virus-ravaged Iraq.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Police have identified an armed protester who was shot and killed by a person who had driven into a crowd at a demonstration in Texas. Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said 28-year-old Garrett Foster was fatally shot Saturday at a police brutality protest. Manley said a vehicle drove up to protesters and honked its horn. Manley said the driver and several witnesses told police Foster pointed an assault rifle at the driver. The driver shot Foster, drove away and later called 911. Foster's mother said her son had been a regular at the protests with his fiancée, who uses a wheelchair.
