AURORA, Colo. (AP) — A car drove through a crowd and a protester was shot in the suburban Denver suburb of Aurora during demonstrations against racial injustice. The Aurora Police Department said on Twitter that protesters were walking on Interstate 225 Saturday when a vehicle drove through. Police said a protester fired a weapon, striking at least one person who was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Authorities said the vehicle was towed and they are investigating. Tensions have been heightened at recent protests against racial injustice since federal officials were sent to quell demonstrations in Portland, Oregon.

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle police declared a riot following large demonstrations in the city’s Capitol Hill neighborhood and deployed flash bangs and pepper spray to try to clear an area near where weeks earlier people had set up an “occupied protest zone” that stretched for several blocks. Via Twitter, police said they had made some arrests Saturday and were “investigating a possible explosive damage” to the walls of the city’s East Precinct police station. Authorities said rocks and bottles were thrown at officers. More than two dozen people were arrested. Thousands of protesters had initially gathered peacefully near downtown Seattle on Saturday in a show of solidarity with fellow demonstrators in Portland, Oregon.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Hundreds of armed, predominantly Black, activists demanding justice for Breonna Taylor gathered in her Kentucky hometown for peaceful demonstrations that drew counter-protesters from a white militia group. Police set up barricades to keep the armed groups apart Saturday in Louisville. Protests have flared over the death of Taylor, a Black woman killed when police busted into her apartment in March. By the time Black activists arrived in the heart of downtown Saturday afternoon, most of white militia members had left. Earlier in the day, police say three Black activists were accidentally shot in a park where the militia had gathered. Police say the victims had non-life-threatening injuries.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says Republicans are set to roll out the next COVID-19 aid package on Monday. Mnuchin assures that the fine-tuned proposal has the support of President Donald Trump. Mnuchin and the White House's acting chief of staff, Mark Meadows, met Saturday on Capitol Hill to salvage the $1 trillion proposal that was abruptly pulled back just days ago. Mnuchin told reporters at the Capitol that extending an expiring unemployment benefit — but reducing it substantially — is a top priority for Trump. Mnuchin’s optimistic assessment comes before Democrats weigh in publicly on the updated proposal, which remains only a starting point in negotiations.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — Hurricane Hanna has roared ashore onto the Texas Gulf Coast as a Category 1 storm, bringing winds, rain and storm surge to a part of the country trying to cope with a spike in coronavirus cases. The National Hurricane Center says the first hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season made landfall twice Saturday afternoon within the span of a little over an hour. Meteorologists say the biggest concern from Hanna is expected to be flooding from heavy rainfall. Many parts of Texas, including areas near where Hanna came ashore, have been dealing with a recent surge in coronavirus cases. Local officials say they were prepared for whatever the storm might bring.
