Wildfire burning in Juab County near Mona; structures threatened

A new wildfire began burning in Juab County near Mona on Monday afternoon about 5 p.m., fire officials reported through Utah Fire Info. The blaze, dubbed the Power Line Fire, was estimated to be about 50-100 acres as of 5:15 p.m. and by 6:40 p.m., it had grown to 1,000 acres. Officials said a natural gas power plant, high voltage lines and a large commercial tomato greenhouse were threatened by the flames.

Closure to entry order issued near Knolls Fire

Several areas near the Knolls Fire has been closed to the public, Bureau of Land Management officials announced Monday afternoon.  The closure to entry order came after individuals entered the area to view the burn scar, officials said. The restricted areas are: south of Israel Canyon on the east side of the Lake Mountains, east of the Lake Mountains Ridgeline, north of the Solider Pass County Road and west of Utah Lake.

Redwood Road remains closed south of Harbor Parkway til midnight and will reopen both directions then. However, we ask people to stay out of the area for the next few days, unless necessary travel is required, as we continue to contain the fire.#KnollsFire

Volcano Fire caused by fireworks; 80% contained

The Volcano Fire, which began in Washington County on Sunday night, was mapped at 234 acres and was 80% contained as of Monday afternoon, fire officials reported. The blaze was caused by fireworks and wind gusts drove the fire initially. As of 4 p.m. Monday, the fire was smoldering. Fire officials: 20 of 37 fires sparked over the weekend were human-caused

Utah Fire Info, which is run by state and federal agencies, tweeted that 37 new fires started over the weekend. That includes the Traverse and Knolls fires. Of those, 20 are known to be human-caused.

There were 37 new wildfires over this past weekend in Utah. More than 20 of them were human-caused. That brings our statewide season total to 537 starts - More than 425 human starts this year. #ffsljc

That's added to a problematic year for fires in Utah. The agencies report there have now been 537 fires reported this year and at least 425, or about 79%, are believed to be human-caused. Most of Utah remains in a drought after a lackluster spring precipitation total. The poor spring precipitation led to projections that it would be a busy fire season. The number of fires reported before July is already a little more than half of the entire 2019 fire season. Last year, officials reported 1,050 fires that burned 88,058 total acres. — Carter Williams, KSL.com

Cooler temperatures, rain help firefighters battling Knolls Fire

Rain and cooler-than-average temperatures have helped firefighters gain control of the Knolls Fire, which allowed Saratoga Springs to lift evacuations, officials said Monday afternoon. "We're in good shape. There's been very little growth today," said Bureau of Land Management spokesperson Kari Boyd-Peak. That's not to say fire crews are out of the woods yet. "That front is smoldering. It's still hot and can pick back up, especially if it gets windy and the fuels dry out again," she explained. The fire has now burned "right around" 12,000 acres, she added. It is still listed as 25% contained. About 200 crews from various agencies were assigned to fight the fire Monday. Saratoga Springs spokesperson David Johnson said 12 homes suffered minor damage and only one home has been destroyed. Nine homes had property damage and one shed was also destroyed. "A lot that you see was residual heat coming off the fires," he said, adding that more than a dozen fences were destroyed. All homes have had their power restored, but Rocky Mountain Power was still working to repair transmission lines, he continued. While residents have been able to return to their homes, Boyd-Peak said the BLM has issued an order closing federally-owned land until firefighters can safely put out the fire. She said the agency is willing to work with homeowners and ranchers with grazing permits during the closure if they need to get back into the area. Those individuals can chat with officials at their post located at the Sage Hills Elementary school, 3033 W Swainson Ave. in Saratoga Springs. Johnson said all residents should be prepared to evacuate again should the fire pick back up but that "everything looks good" at the time being. He also encouraged every person to avoid Lake Mountain area and that nonresidents avoid the area where the evacuations were issued to allow residents to get back to their homes. Redwood Road remains closed at Harbor Bay. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Rock Path Fire up to 20K acres burned; now 75% contained

Better weather conditions Monday have also helped firefighters get a stronger hold on the large Rock Path Fire burning in Millard and Beaver counties. The Bureau of Land Management now reports the lightning-caused fire is 75% contained. It was listed as 45% contained this morning. Officials said there have been "minimal fire activity observed." The fire has now scorched 20,941 acres since it ignited Thursday but no structures or roads are threatened. Nearly 300 crews were assigned to fight the blaze Monday. — Carter Williams, KSL.com

Traverse Fire 100% contained, officials say

Fire officials say they have gained full containment of the Traverse Fire, which was sparked shortly before midnight Saturday evening.

Evacuations lifted for Saratoga Springs residents near Knolls Fire

All 3,100 evacuations have been lifted for Saratoga Springs residents affected by the Knolls Fire. Power has been restored in the area. However, residents are still asked to remain on alert and prepared to evacuate again at any time, city officials said. Southbound Redwood Road is still closed going south of Harbor Parkway, officials said. The fire is still 25% contained.

Canal Fire in Millard County grows to 30K acres

The Canal Fire, burning five miles north of Oak City in Millard County, has grown to 30,000 acres, state and federal fire officials reported Monday through Utah Fire Info. The fire was first reported Friday and was controlled, but high winds pushed the fire over the containment lines Sunday. The fire is now 0% contained, officials said. Some evacuations and road closures were in effect in the area but have since been lifted. Some outbuildings have been destroyed, but it is not clear how many, officials said.

Volcano Fire in Washington County grows to 300 acres

Containment lines held overnight on the Volcano Fire, burning north of St. George in Washington County. The fire is estimated to be 300 acres and 20% contained. Crews are still investigating the cause of the fire.

1 home destroyed, 12 damaged in 10K-acre Knolls Fire in Saratoga Springs

One home was destroyed and 12 others have been damaged in the Knolls Fire, burning at 10,000 acres in Saratoga Springs, officials said Monday. The home that was destroyed was outside of city limits, according to Saratoga Springs spokesperson David Johnson. Eighteen other homes had fences destroyed and one had a shed destroyed. There were nine other instances of unspecified property damage due to the blaze, officials said. There are 200-250 people assigned to fight the fire as of Monday morning, according to Bureau of Land Management spokesperson Kari Boyd-Peak. Crews are hoping that cooler weather and precipitation will help get the fire under control by the end of the day Monday, or within the next few days, Boyd-Peak said. "Weather’s definitely on our side this morning," she said. As of Monday morning, the fire is estimated at 25% containment, fire officials reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Boyd-Peak said. Evacuation orders are still in effect for 1,300 homes in the area, Johnson added. People are asked to stay out of the area and not to visit their homes for any reason. Anyone still in their homes in the evacuation area should leave immediately, he said. Additionally, people are asked to stay clear of the fire area on Lake Mountain, Johnson said. Do not visit the fire area with an off-road vehicle, or fly over the fire area with a drone, he added.

Knolls Fire in Saratoga Springs estimated at 10,000 acres, 25% containment

The Knolls Fire in Saratoga Springs has grown to an estimated 10,000 acres and is 25% contained, state and federal fire officials reported Monday through Utah Fire Info. The fire had some light precipitation overnight, fire officials reported. Road closures and evacuations are still in effect for the fire, Saratoga Springs city officials said. People are asked to stay clear of the fire and evacuation areas as crews continue assessing damage and hazards in the affected areas. Further updates are expected at a press briefing at 8 a.m., city officials said.

Big weather change helps firefighters in northern Utah

Cool, wet weather is helping the firefighting effort in northern Utah early Monday morning. Winds calmed down, rain began to fall in some areas, and temperatures are forecast to reach only the mid-60s, according to KSL meteorologist Grant Weyman.

13,000 Saratoga Springs residents evacuated by Knolls Fire

Thirty-one hundred homes are in the area of concern, impacting up to 13,000 residents, according to officials. City officials are telling those residents to stay with family or friends if they can, if not, to evacuate to Westlake High School. Those who need to have someone evacuated is asked to notify authorities and not go to any homes in the area at this time. Saratoga Springs Mayor Jim Miller and the city council also held an emergency meeting Sunday and unanimously voted to issue a declaration of local emergency in response to the Knolls Fire. Evacuation orders lifted in Lehi, Draper after 500-acre fire sparked by fireworks

A fast-moving fire enveloped the hills surrounding the Traverse Mountain area Saturday night and into Sunday morning, evacuating residents in neighborhoods threatened by the fire. As of 7:45 p.m. Sunday, all evacuation orders in the Autumn Hills neighborhood in Lehi and Maple Hollow neighborhood in Draper were lifted. Rock Path Fire 45% contained

A lightning-caused fire in Millard and Beaver counties is burning about 16,588 acres, fire officials said Sunday. The Rock Path Fire is 45% contained, they said. "Crews will continue to construct and strengthen fireline using hand-crews and bulldozers around the perimeter of the fire" Sunday, officials wrote in an email. A total of 335 people are battling the blaze; it is not currently threatening any structures, officials said.
